Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
