The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
